One day Jesus and his disciples went to a wedding in Cana, and Jesus' mother Mary was there too. Now Cana was in the north of the country, near the lake called Galilee, and it was fairly near to Nazareth where Jesus had grown up with Mary and Joseph.
After the wedding had been going for a while, there was no wine left for the people to drink.
Mary said to Jesus, "Jesus, there is no wine left to drink", and he replied, "Why tell me about it? The time isn't ready for me to do miracles yet." But Mary said to the servants who were serving at the wedding, "You do whatever Jesus tells you to do."Jesus saw that there were six big stone waterpots sitting near where they were, so he told the servants to fill them all with water. It would have been a slow job filling them with water, and when the servants had them full, Jesus told them to now give a drink to the person who was in charge of the feast.
When the man in charge had a drink, he was very surprised because he knew that the feast had run out of wine. He called the bridegroom, and asked him what the story was. He said to the bridegroom, "Usually people start off with using the good wine and serve the poor wine later, but this is the best wine there has been."
This was the very first miracle that Jesus did. It wasn't very long before he did a lot more miracles.
See if you can answer these questions:
1. Who went to the wedding with Jesus?
2. What did Jesus tell the servants to do?
3. Was the wine good for drinking?
You can read this story for yourself in the New Testament book of John, chapter 2 verses 1 to 11.
